I was reading an article the other day and it started talking about the names of God. We hear and know some of them but do you know what they mean? I didn’t and wanted to know more. The old testament is filled with so many names for God and they all have meaning. Some are used only one time and some are used over 6000 times. I feel like if we know the names of God and what they mean we grow closer and more intimate with our creator.
To start us off here is a list of some of the names of God that is most recognized. There are more but I am going to highlight these.
El Elyon- shows the majesty and sovereignty of God examples of this can be found in Psalm 57:2, 78:35, and in Genesis 14:18-22.
Adonai- There is heavy use in Isaiah, it is used over 200x in Ezekiel, and 11x in Daniel chapter 9. Adonai is a parallel to Yaweh
Yahweh- This name of God is not spoken by Jewish people due to the holiness of the name. Adonai is commonly used in place of this name because of this reason and so is Jehovah.
Jehovah Nissi- A banner of encouragement is given to us hope and a focal point. This was used at the point when the children of Israel were fighting the Amalekites and they won. They built an altar during this war to be a focal point to remember that God is their focal point.
Jehovah Rapha- The one who heals the emotional and physical needs of His people. Examples of this can be found in Jeremiah 3:22, 30:17; Isaiah 30:26, 61:1; Psalm 103:3
Jehovah Shammah- This is the symbolic name of earthly Jerusalem and means it will be restored, it also means that God has not forgotten Jerusalem.
Jehovah Tsidkenu- God reveals himself unceasingly. Jeremiah 23:6, 33:16
Jehovah Jireh- (The Lord Provides) Symbolic name given to Mount Moriah, the place where Abraham was given a substitution for Isaac, the place where Solomon would build his temple, and last it refers to Calvary. The name shows the Lord does provide at so many different levels if we could only see the unfolding of God’s plan in a fast forward motion like this.
Jehovah Sabaoth- (The Lord of Hosts) The Lord has sovereignty over all armies heavenly and earthly. This even includes the planets, stars, and all that has been created.
There are so many praise songs that are modern day that come to mind as I am reading through these descriptions of the names of God. As I am writing thinking of the meaning of these I am in awe that He would orchestrate such a history so deeply rich and meaningful and with such purpose that it means our lives have to have the same purpose somehow we just can’t see how it all weaves together, and we may never. I hope you learned more about the name of God and how Amazing He is!
