The Gift of Peace

Holy Spirit, you are welcome here. Come fill this place and fill the atmosphere. Your glory, God is what ours hearts long for to be overcome by your presence, Lord! Your presence, Lord!– Francesca Battistelli

How often do we invite and ask the Lord to be present in our lives? Do you ask for guidance from him or the Holy Spirit?

When Jesus left this earthly ministry he sent a Helper for us, the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit does many functions on our behalf. He teaches, reminds, convicts us of sin, announces God’s judgement, and guides us into truth. The first mention of the Holy Spirit can be found in John 14: 16-31. Jesus is telling of the promise of a helper after he is gone and tells the disciples that the Holy Spirit will help them remember what he taught them and provide a lasting peace so we should not fear.

The peace we feel when assured by the spirit is unlike any other. How many of you have been in a situation that you knew without a doubt either God was moving you to go one way or another, assuring you it would be ok no matter what the doctors were telling you, to take a step out in faith and you knew it was the right thing to do but could not explain it way? We have a confident assurance thanks to the Holy Spirit working in our lives.

“For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” 1 Cor 2: 10-14

Wow! I think we misunderstand a lot of the times why non believers think we are silly for our beliefs. They are not led by the spirit or see through spiritual discernment and they can’t recognize how amazing our God is until they are changed from the inside out. You can also observe how these verses confirm the Holy Spirit’s influence in the writing of the scriptures. They are divinely inspired from God, when Paul wrote this book he was under the influence of God and advising the people according to what the Lord wanted them to hear.

“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8: 26-27

I love this verse because I know if I dont have the words to say out of my mouth the Spirit is there to help and intercede for me. At my lowest points I have cried and sat in silence before the Lord because there were no words to express what I was feeling.    Those times in our lives when we are so heartbroken, confused, and lost is where the groanings are the loudest I believe. I am so grateful that he loved me enough to send someone that would know my heart to by my helper in times of need.

The gift that was given that day forever changes the way we read and interpret the scriptures, live our lives, have a peace that surpases all understanding, are able to face each day with an assurance that no matter what happens we are ok. I hope you have that assurance in your life. If not I know a God who would love to give it to you forever all you have to do is ask.
