I have often wondered if Lot’s wife looked back just to get one more glimpse at the life she knew, the people that were her friends, what she thought she was leaving behind; instead of looking ahead like she was told. She like so many of us want just one more look at the life we are leaving behind, the job, the friends, etc… for the journey ahead. So many times those people are not supposed to journey with us to the next step. As always there are exceptions to this rule; you have life long friends that pick up right where you leave off each time as if no time had passed.
How many times have you wanted you wanted to turn back and look just one more time to make sure that you weren’t supposed to stay? How many times have you questioned God are you sure Lord? Did you really mean this way and not that way? But think if you had turned back in life and not moved forward where would you be?
God has made it abundantly clear so many times in my life when He was wanted me to move on with my life whether it was with a relationship/friendship/job and now a church home that it is the time GO! I have stopped and looked backed several times just to make sure is this right? Lord are you sure? And then typically the nudging gets stronger. Have you ever been there and experienced this?
I know that God doesn’t make mistakes but the human side of me has trouble letting go. There are always many reasons for the changes that happen in life whether we are ready for them or not, whether we expect them or not, its the ebb and flow explained in Ecclesiastes 3.
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NIV
Sometimes I think its a test to see if we will take a step of faith to prepare us for the next big journey He has for us, but we must be willing to step out in faith and go.
Looking back has cost me time on my assignments from God. I haven’t trusted him with my whole heart, with my next step, with adventure in this life and have often wondered did He give my assignment away to someone more willing and not so scared? I have learned to looked to ahead and not to the sides as much although I still look on occasion just to see what’s going on but I don’t linger.
“Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God’s throne.” Hebrews 12: 1b-2
Let us encourage, uplift, and love one another along the way and run the race together but not against each other.
